New State-of-the-Art ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Inaugurated in Chennai

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a newly constructed, state-of-the-art Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Chennai on August 18. Two additional key facilities has also been opened: the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC) at Chennai Port and the Coast Guard Air Enclave (CGAE) in Puducherry.

The inauguration was attended by notable dignitaries from both Union and State organizations. This landmark occasion represents a major advancement in maritime safety and regional coordination, significantly enhancing maritime security and emergency response capabilities along the Indian coastline.

The new MRCC in Chennai is set to become a crucial asset, greatly improving the coordination and effectiveness of maritime rescue operations for mariners and fishermen in distress. This cutting-edge facility underscores the ICG’s commitment to safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring swift, effective responses in critical situations.

The RMPRC at Chennai Port is a pioneering development in marine pollution management. As the first of its kind in the region, it will be instrumental in coordinating responses to marine pollution incidents, including oil and chemical spills, in coastal waters.

The CGAE in Puducherry marks a significant milestone for the ICG, bolstering maritime security along the Puducherry and South Tamil Nadu coast. Equipped with Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Squadrons, the Air Enclave will enhance aerial surveillance and response capabilities.

These new facilities are set to play a crucial role in reinforcing maritime security, ensuring effective emergency responses, and demonstrating India’s commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection.
